Included in the CSTN network is Northwood Recycling and Energy Ltd. Located in Oshawa, Ontario, this transfer facility is committed to safe systems and methods that advance the reduction, reuse and recycling of a variety of waste streams.
Accepted materials include leaf and yard waste, household waste, and construction and demolition waste brought in by the general public and by the Regional Municipality of Durham collection programs. Strict protocols govern customer support, inspection, land management and continuous sorting and separation to identify hazardous materials, minimize cross contamination and ensure an optimum yield of recyclable materials. Careful attention is also paid to grading and the application of surface materials that reduce the potential for undesirable leaching into the ground.
All yard waste is sent to CSTN’s member composting facility where it is processed into high quality compost with a number of applications, including use in other CSTN sustainable products. In other examples of reuse, large pieces of wood are used to create wood chips with a number of applications, and aluminum and other metals are gathered, separated and sent to appropriate facilities for recycling.
