Strategic Integration and EQM Governance

EQM

In addition to complying with government regulations and creating environmentally sound products and resource management systems, all CSTN members are mandated to operate within an Environmental Quality Management System, based on ISO 14001 standards. Each business stream within the CSTN network has its own specific EQM measurement and accountability system which includes, among other things, standards and policies for ensuring:
  • Sampling and testing of lands and products, even where not regulated
  • The safe collection, transport and disposal of materials
  • Superior land stewardship including ecosystem protection and/or rehabilitation
  • Responsible equipment use, storage and maintenance
  • The implementation of energy-efficient systems
  • Open community relations and environmental awareness initiatives

Benefits of an EQM system also extend beyond environmental issues and result in strengthened organizational structures, improved health and safety standards for employees, increased efficiencies, predictable responses and outcomes, clearly identified priorities, improved employee support systems, enhanced quality service and stronger public and community relations.

What is ISO 14001?

Building on its ISO 9000 series of quality assurance standards for manufacturers,
the Geneva based International Organization for Standardization introduced the
ISO 14000 series due to the growing concern over poor practices and
environmental disasters worldwide. ISO 14001 is one part of the series that deals
specifically with the development of an Environmental Quality Management
(EQM) system. More and more companies and municipalities are deciding only to
do business with organizations that not only claim to have environmentally sound
practices, but have taken the proactive step of creating standards and defining
their practices in an EQM system.
